Joseph Sirmans was born in Bulloch County, GA on May 16, 1808, a son ofJosiah Sirmans. He wa s married in 1829 to Rebecca, Daughter of Rev.William Smith, R.S. of Ware, later of Clinch Co unty. She was born inNovember, 1811, in Liberty County. By her, twelve children were born.S he died December 20, 1852, and Mr. Sirmans, the next year, married Mrs.Sallie Howell, daughte r of Isaac Burkhalter and widow of Thomas Howell.She was born January 8, 1815, and died Septe mber 21, 1887. By thismarriage, one son, Isaac Sirmans, was born. Mr. Sirmans was cut into Clinch County when it was formed in 1850 partlyout of Lowndes County . His home was in the 586th Militia District. Heserved one term, 1873-74, as Representativ e from Clinch County in thelegislature. Mr. Sirmans was a member of Union Primitive Baptist Church originally.He was received and bap tized prior to 1832 (exact date not shown bychurch roll), and his wife was received and bapti zed August 8, 1841.They were dismissed by letter February 14, 1847, and united with thenewly- formed Bethany Church nearer their home. Mr. Sirmans was in the Indian War and served as a private under Capt.John J. Johnson, Florid a Militia, enlisting April, 1838, and beingdischarged at Troublesome (now Statenville), GA si x months later. Healso served as a private in Capt. David Johnson's company, GeorgiaMilitia , volunteering at Fort Gilmer (near the present village of Fargo),November 1, 1839, serving u ntil December 31, 1839, when he was hornorablydischarged. He was granted 80 acres of bount y land for this service, in1851, and 80 acres again October 11, 1856. Joseph Sirmans died October 7, 1888. He and his wives were buried in theFender Cemetery. The latter moved wi th his family to Montgomery County, Ga., about1795-6 where he is found on the Montgomery Coun ty tax-digest in 1797,1798, 1805, 1806. John Sears served in Capt. John Moore's company,Nor th Carolina Line, 1777-78. David Sears was married in Montgomery County April 19, 1810, toLevicy, daughter of Lewi s Sanders Nobles, R.S. (q.v). She was born 1792in Georgia, and died in 1868. David Sears grew up and married in Montgomery County and lived thereuntil about 1825 whe n he moved with .his family to what was then WareCounty and settled in the 586th District, G. M. The district in those daysextended up to the Telfair County line on the north and embrace d all ofthe 6th and 7th land districts. This territory was annexed to ClinchCounty in 1850 ; to Coffee in 1854 and to Atkinson in 1918. David Sears died in 1879. He and his wife were buried at Union HillCongregational Churc h of which they were members. Their graves aremarked. Mr. Sears was commissioned June 20, 1809 an ensign in the 52nd Districtof Emanuel County. Th is district laid partly in Montgomery County. Heserved in the War of 1812 as a private in Ca pt. John G. Colbert'scompany of infantry, 2nd Reginient of Georgia Militia. He enlisted Oct .12, 1814; was honorably discharged March 15, 1815. Mr. Sears had a brother, Harrison Sears, born 1799, who lived inpresent Atkinson then Cl inch counties. He too, has many descendantsliving in Wiregrass Georgia. Notes:
LEWIS SANDERS NOBLES, a Revolutionary soldier, is the ancestor of a large number of people i n Irwin, Coffee, Berrien, Atkinson and Clinch counties. He was born in 1760 in South Carolin a and was living with his parents in Edgefield District when the Revolutionary struggle began . Atthe age of 17 years he ran away from home to join in the fight, and served several month s under Gen. Elijah Clark. He later served other enlistments totaling about four years, an d was in the battles of King Mountain, Brandywine and Yorktown. After the war he married Est her (commonly called Easter) Robinson, and moved to Georgia. Mr. Nobles and family lived for some years in Montgomery and Laurens counties. Mrs. Nobles d ied about 1840 in Montgomery County and Mr.Nobles spent his last years among his children. H e was living in 1850 census with David Sears and family in what was at the time Clinch Count y but now is Atkinson Co. and was 92 years old. He soon after made his home with his grandda ughter, Mrs. Juniper Griffis, and died at her home in Clinch County, Nov. 1st, 1856. He wa s buried in Guest Millpond Cemetery. The grave was marked in 1950 by the John Floyd Chapter , D. A.R. Lewis S. Nobles was paid April 8, 1785, by the State of South Carolina ,for a mare lost in th e Revolutionary War. He served as a lieutenant in the South Carolina militia, 1778. He dre w land in both the 1827 and 1838 land lotteries as a Revolutionary soldier. He made applicat ion for apension Nov. 14, 1854, while residing in Clinch County, but it was rejected for lac k of proof. However, descendants are eligible for membership in D.A.R., S.A.R., etc., in a s much as he was granted land as a Revolutionary soldier. Record is found in Laurens County of deed dated Oct. 25, 1813 fromLewis Sanders Nobles and Es ther, his wife, to Seaborn Jones, conveying two hundred acres "whereon the grantor now reside s" in said county, and also another tract of 200 acres adjoining which he had granted from th eState (Deed Book "D", page 7, Laurens County). Another deed is found tothe same lands fro m Lewis Sanders Nobles and his sons, William, James and Sanders Nobles (identified as fathe r and sons) to Seaborn Jones, dated Nov. 3, 1814, (Deed Book "D", page 222). His father was a Revolutionary War soldier.Soon after the war he moved his family to Wilke s County, Georgia. Aftera few years there, he moved again & made his permanent settlement in Bulloch County, Georgia. Josiah Parrish married ca 1793, but his wife's name and the place of,their marriage is not kn own. About the time he got married, he wasserving in the Washington County, Georgia militia a s a private underCaptain John McKenzie. His father died in Bulloch County, in 1800. His estate was settledin 1802 and Josiah pu rchased part of his estate. On September 5, 1806, he was commissioned a captain in the BullochCounty militia for th e 45th District. By 1820 he was living in Camden County, Georgia. The census forthat year listed him a s "Joseph Parrish" 45 years and upwards, his wife45 years and upwards, a son at least 16 year s and under 26, a daughter atleast 10 years and under 16 ' a son at least 10 years and unde r 16, adaughter under 10 years, and a son under 10 years. He was a fortunate drawer in the 1821 Georgia Land Lottery. But he didn'ttake out this land g rant. He let it revert back to the State and it waslater sold to the highest bidder. Camden County land tax records show him paying taxes there until1823. Between 1823 and 1824, he and his sons Allen and Tyre moved theirfamilies to northern Fl orida, settling in Alachua County. The 1830 Alachua County census lists: Josiah Parrish 50-60, his wife50-60, a son 20-3 0 a son 15-20, and a daughter 10-15, living near theSuwannee River, St. Mary's River, Olust y Creek, & St. Afee River. Josiah Parrish served in the Florida Indian Wars (1835-1842). His firstservice came when h e was commissioned a captain in his own mountedmilitia on May 22, 1836. Four of his sons, tw o sons-in-law, and twograndsons also served in this unit. After four months of service hismi litia was mustered out on September 22, 1836, at Fort Mills. He waspaid $324 for his captain 's service. The next day he enrolled in Captain William Cason's First FloridaMilitia, as a private . This unit was involved in some Indian fighting atWahoo Swamp on November 21, 1836. This u nit recorded that private JohnAlford Osteen was killed by the enemy on December 15, 1836, a t Garry'sFerry. Osteen was a son-in-law of Josiah Parrish. His service endedJanuary 22, 183 7 at Fort Mills, East Florida Territory. His service continued in Captain Cason's militia. He reenrolled asa private on Januar y 23, 1837, at Fort Mills. He served four months andfourteen days and was paid $91.74. His d ischarge took place on June 5,1837. His Wife died sometime between 1830 and 1836. He remarriedSeptember 1, 1836 to Cassandr a (Cassey) Cason, in Columbia County,Florida. She was the widow of Eli Cason. She was born M ay 10, 1799, to John and Ada (Weeks) Osteen. The 1840 census had Josiah Parrish and his family living in ColumbiaCounty,which was for med out of Alachua County in 1832. It lists Josiah Parrish 60-70, his wife40-50, a female 15-20 , a male 10-15, and a female 10-15. The children inthe census I probably were his step-child ren from his wife's firstmarriage. Josiah Parrish continued to live on his farm in Columbia Co., untilhis death on Novembe r 29, 1846. His widow lived with her son James Cason. She is listed in hishousehold in the 1850 a nd 1860 census records. Cassey Parrish received 160 acres of land from the government forhis military service i n the Indian Wars. She sold this bounty land to Abraham Mott. Her deathoccurred sometime after 18 60. Hezekiah Parrish was a son of Henry Parrish (RS) and Mary Ann Monk Parrish, daughter of Melo n Monk of Bulloch County, Georgia. He was the grandson of Joel and Mary Woolfolk Parrish, an d the great-grandson of William Parrish of Duplin County, North Carolina. On December 16, 18 02,Hezekiah married Nancy Cook, daughter of John Cook of Bulloch County, Georgia. To Hezekia h and Nancy were born seven children. Hezekiah served in the war of 1812 as a Private from th e State of Georgia. After Hezekiah married, he bought a farm on Fifteen Mile Creek in Bulloch , later Emanuel County. Over the years, Hezekiah received several land grants and bought oth er lands and many slaves, and he became very wealthy. In 1838 Hezekiah became ill, and coul d not take care of himself. Henry Jackson Parrish and Augustus Miles Cowart were appointed a s guardians to take care of him. He later recovered. In 1850, his wife, Nancy, died. On Dec ember 17, 1855, he married Rachael Daughtry. In his will, he made no arrangement for his ne w wife. When he died in 1859, there was a long court battle, in which the will was voided, a nd arrengements made for her care. The estate of Hezekiah Parrish was over $50,000.00 and 1 8 slaves.The court case kept it from being settled for several years. The final settlement w as in 1865, when the Civil War was over, and the slaves were freed. Hezekia never came to th e Wiregrass area, but he had several grandchildren who did.
