Dr. Augustus McDowell, who became a surgeon with the Union Army late in the Civil War, would not permit his son William to enlist, but he was allowed to work for the Sanitary Comission and was a stretcher-bearer in the Battle of the Wilderness. William before joining in the war effort on Aug. 15, 1863 joined the Lamington Presbyterian Ch. After the war William came to Newark to learn a trade. Soon afterwards he went to work in New York City. Except for a few years in his early married life when he lived in Bloomfield until 1899, was a resident of Newark, commuting daily to New York. The early business experience of William O. McDowell was as a grocery clerk, and then in the twine and cordage business. He soon established the cordage manufactuing firm of Merifield * McDowell. Later with his two bothers, he formed the banking firm of McDowell Brothers. He turned to railroads, planned the consolidation of the New York, Susquehanna & Western, and helped reorganize the Montclair Railroad, the Midland Railway of NJ, and the New York, Ontario & Western. For a time he was President of the New York & Sea Beach Railroad, one of the earliest of the Coney Island lines. For many years William O. McDowell was a leader in patriotic and peace movements. He was chairman of the 'Pedestal Fund of the Statue of Liberty' Committee of the Sons of the Revolution, which in 1884 raised frunds by popular subscription to complete the pedestal for Bartholdi's statue, now world famous as the Statue of Liberty. He was on the executive committee of the American Institute of Christian Philosophy, and was a Trustee of Library Americana. He was chairman of the 'Committe on Furnishing new Headquarters in Independence Hall' (Philadelphia), for the Universal Peace Union. He was active in the Human Freedom League, and chairman of their 'Committee of Liberty Poles'. This committee had the object of having flag poles erected at prominent places to display the flage of every nation. One of these poles was erected at the Highlands, NJ, at the entrance to New York Harbor. William O. McDowell was chairman of the Columbian Liberty Bell Committee which instigated the 'Peace Bell', one of the attractions of the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This bell was an enlarged replica of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. He was president of the Cuban-American League, and secretary of the Pan-Republic Congress Committee. Following a disagreement with the Society of the Sons of the Revolution of New York, William O. McDowell, a member, organized in 1889 a separate society in New Jersey, which invited other states to join and adopted the name of Sons of the American Revolution. At the first National Congress of the Society, held Apr. 30, 1890 in Louisville, KY, Compatriot William O. McDowell of New Jersey received the special honor of a parchment certificate of membershiop, Number 1 in the National Society, and Number 1 in the New Jersey Society. This new society at first accepted both men and women as members, but his was changed restricting membership to men. William O. McDowell, believing women should also be interested in patriotic movements, provided with Mrs. Lockwood the initial insp8iration for the formation of the society to be known as the Daughters of the American Revolution, and William O. McDowell presided at the organizational meeting held in Washington, D.C. Oct 11, 1890. He is considered the father of the D.A.R. In later years William O. McDowell's interested interest turned more toward world peace. He was known as the 'Peacemaker', and was connected with The League of Peace, whose headquarters were at The Hague, the forerunner of the League of Nations, and the United Nations. He was a delegate to the Peace Conference at The Hague, and once was nominated for the Nobel peace prize. WIlliam Osborne McDowell presented his many papers to the New York Public Library, and with the help of these papers and material from other sources, an essay with many more details on the life of Wm. O. McDowell will be found in the Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society (October 1957), Volume 75, pages 237-258."

McDowell was a mining engineer, and was the author of many articles on mines and mining. In 1880 he was living in New York City. On Jany. 23, 1892 Frederick H. McDowell, single, of Montclair, NJ sold a lot on Elm Street, Montclair, for $3500 to his sister, Jennie K. McDowell, also of Montclair."
